The things you learn later

Apr. 4th, 2008 | 11:10 pm

i found out today that Stephen Colbert did the 2006 White House Correspondents' Dinner. and did his thing nigh 8 feet from Bush himself, and i have to say, he has balls.

and while i'm posting. i've been waiting 9 years for this day, and it finally happened. i locked my keys in my car. This is something i've been pretty much obsessing over ever since i've had keys, and something to lock them in. to the point that i've never locked the hatch that is the hatchback of my car, just so that the one day it inevitably happens, i could just fold the back seat down and clime through. and you know what? i wasn't even late for work... okay thats a lie, but i was going to be late anyway. but at least i had a good not-actually-a-lie excuse.

Oops

Mar. 10th, 2008 | 10:20 pm

It appears that my desktop computer may have brick-ifyed. Saturday there was a power outage, but not just an outage, the power when out and came back a couple times very quickly. after the first couple i unplugged my desktop. but when i plugged it back in tonight and turned it on, lights turn on, fans spin up. HDD does not, no booting of any kind, no video of any kind, and an audio message "system failed CPU temp."

so something is seriously fried.... i have to have faith the HDD is recoverable. as i have some particularly irreplaceable files on it.

might as well make a cheap box out of it, considering i don't really us my desk top anymore except as a data server/downloader.

I am bitter and twisted. Expect from me acerbic humour and sharp commentary. While I may seem nasty at first, I'm actually quite good company if I like you, so long as you don't mind a bit of cutting to the chase. What Flavour Are You?

i would, if i wasn't so lazy

Mar. 8th, 2008 | 09:01 pm

so i was planning on using today to cut a big chunk out of FF12, but the weather and RG&E apparently had a brunch meeting and decided that; no, reading would be the activity of the day. Which is just as well. i've been meaning to finish the last book i was reading. being a non-fiction book about the current state of the culture in theoretical physics. btw, current state = sad.

well at some point while talking about someone working on something called quantum loop gravity (that i don't understand AT ALL), i somehow got an idea for a propulsion system that all it does is make an object ignore all the forces acting on that object except ones acting in a single defined direction. at first i thought this was kinda cool cause instead of the atmosphere acting on you uniformly with would be pushing you in one direction with no resistance to forward movement. but then it occurred to me that (much cooler in my book) in fact half of the universe would be pulling you gravitationally in one direction without the other half to cancel it out. Now i haven't exactly done the math on this yet but i'm pretty sure that "everything in the universe / 2 = a lot" and if you take into the fact its possible the 4 dimensional universe is really just a holographic projection of a 5 dimensional hollow sphere universe, then its the entire universe pulling on you gravitationally form around the curve.

thats totally the kind of thing you could write a sci-fi book around. of course figuring out how something like that would actually work would be... hard. sure you could mess with "G" in a non-uniform way, but you'd still have all the other forces that you'd end up interacting with.

but yeah. im lazy.

To those who have PS3's and Motorstorm; I am proud to say that you can now download my time attack ghost for The Grizzly. name: monev44, 1:26.08 rank 131 (for now)

/bows

for those who don't know what i'm talking about. If your PS3 is connected to the internet, the playstation network automatically keeps track of the best time attack times for every course, and if you time is in the top 250, other people can download your "ghost" and race against it like you would if it was your own previous best time.

when you think of the fact that pretty much anyone with a PS3 has Motorstorm, and reportedly half the PS3s out there are online, its not really surprising that actually getting to the top 250 is HARD. as part of the time attack package they include the Devs' best times. for The Grizzly the devs time is 1:29.34. my previous best 1:27.65 got me 273 on the list. and now 1:26.08 gets me to 131.

all the times on the list are very close together. As an example, if i shave off those .08 seconds i'd go up three places. so getting bumped down is pretty easy. hopefully i won't get bumped down 119 places that quickly.

Motorstorm: review after 4 months of play

Nov. 18th, 2007 | 07:37 pm

Whenever a magazine does a review of a video game they give it to a review, s/he plays it for about a week, and writes a review based on there experiences. This works fine for the most part, the only thing they miss is the parts of the game that you really don't get to in a week. or at lest don't get to fully explore.

this week my father took his PS3 with him to his apartment up north, so i got one of my own. since i had beaten the entire game on my father's PS3, I'd have to do it all over again on THIS one. Thats basically what i spent the weekend doing.

So having gone through the entire game twice now, and having an online winning record of 107 out of 233, i feel like sharing a detailed review of the game based on MY experiences.

press continue for more infoCollapse )

What RPG Player (Not Character) Type Are You?
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Weekend Warrior

The Weekend Warrior is in the game to kick down doors and kill monsters. After a long day in the office or classroom, he wants his character to wade into the action. too much time spent on diplomacy, story arc, planning, or even character-building tends to bore him. He tends to prefer combat-ready, simple-to-create, simple-to-run characters, leaning toward fighter types or blaster magic-users. Optimizing the rules for an ideal character is secondary, so long as he gets to hit things. To the Weekend Warrior, the greatest reward in roleplaying is the exciting, action-packed battle.

With apologies to Robin Laws.

Unexpected Urges

Oct. 19th, 2007 | 11:06 pm

I can't explain it, but for the last couple days I've had this fresh desire to build a model kit. like a Gundam model or something. I just have this indescribable need to glue stuff together and paint it.

And not just the quick Saturday afternoon excuse for a rubber cement party headache, but the meticulous; clip, sand, fit, sand, glue, sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, snap, glue, sand , prime, sand, snap (mental this time), scream, sand, throw, "I just wasted $15-$60! and i can't add numbers good!"

by the way, congrats of the blower brad. I may steal it.
